The Government is about to overhaul laws governing the lives of more than one million tenants.
The previous Labour Government wanted to introduce pro-tenant provisions, but the new National-led Government plans to scrap the most contentious of these so the balance is more even, and to pass sweeping reforms.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand is tipped to cut the official cash rate this month, but mortgage holders and first home buyers are warned not to expect lower interest rates yet.
ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley expects the Reserve Bank to drop the OCR 100 points to 6.5 per cent at the scheduled meeting on October 23. He says it is unlikely to act before then.

Bid to limit tenants' liability draws flak

Proposals to change the law so personal liability of more than a million tenants is limited have inflamed the Insurance Council and landlords.
Minister for Building and Construction Clayton Cosgrove has proposed amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act which would give tenants more power if houses they rented were damaged.
Last week the minister also announced the changes would apply to retirement villages, boarding houses and other forms of assisted living.
